On January 18, 2019 a large rockfall closed the East Rim Trail between Weeping Rock and Observation Point.
Rockfall is an important part of the canyon forming process as each rock that falls widens the canyon. Rockfalls are largely unpredictable and can sometimes impact our human infrastructure. This rockfall is blocking two switchbacks of the trail, which is carved into the canyon wall. Fresh rockfalls can be very unstable so it is important to keep the trail closed until our park physical scientist can evaluate the stability and our trail crew can clear the way.
We don't know how long this trail will be closed, but we are glad to be getting back to work preserving and providing access to this amazing place.
*There is no access to Observation Point from Weeping Rock. Currently, the only way to get to Observation Point would be from the east. Remote roads and deep snow would mean you should have 4-wheel drive and snowshoes to attempt the hike from the east.*
