Le Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park est un véritable petit concentré de désert égyptien (seulement 15 km2 !). Il propose aux randonneurs et amateurs de quad de parcourir quelques dunes de sable aux jolis tons roses et orangés. On peut notamment y découvrir la seconde plus haute dune des États-Unis (la plus haute se trouvant dans le parc national de Great Sand Dunes dans le Colorado), avec 10 mètres de hauteur.

Situation, accès
Le parc de Corak Pink Sand Dunes est situé en Utah, à 20 miles/32 km au nord-ouest de Kanab.
- Depuis Kanab, prenez l’US 89 vers le nord durant 8 miles/12.8 km, puis bifurquez sur la gauche (Hancock Road) durant 10 miles/16 km.
- Depuis Mt Carmel Junction, prenez l’US 89 vers le sud durant 4 miles/6.4 km, puis bifurquez sur la droite (Yellow Jacket Road) durant 10 miles/16 km.
Temps de visite
Le parc étant assez petit, comptez environ 1h30 de visite, le temps de monter jusqu’au sommet de la grande dune.

Depuis le parking près du Visitor Center, marchez jusqu’au point d’observation. De là, parcourez les dunes librement.
Le sommet de la grande dune est facile d’accès et la vue sur l’ensemble du parc y est particulièrement appréciable.
Nous vous conseillons une visite en toute fin d’après-midi jusqu’au crépuscule ou bien à l’aurore. A ces heures, le soleil colore les dunes de magnifiques tons rouges flamboyants.
Les passionnés de faune et de flore pourront rencontrer ici coyotes, serpents, cougars… et trouveront des bosquets de genévriers et des pins de Ponderosa.
En outre, dans la toute proche Moquith Mountains Wilderness Study Area, vous trouverez un sentier, South Fork Indian Canyon Trail (1 mile/1.6 km – environ 30 minutes de marche) permettant de découvrir quelques pictogrammes (clôturés), ainsi qu’une piste réservée aux véhicules 4×4 : Sand Spring 4WD Road.

Horaires d’ouverture
Le parc est ouvert tous les jours de l’année.
Évitez si possible le week end, la multitude de quad parcourant les dunes gâchant un peu le plaisir ainsi que les week end du Memorial Day et du Labor Day.

Géologie
Le parc de Coral Pink Sand Dunes (1 825 mètres d’altitude) est situé entre deux chaînes de montagnes, les Moquith et les Moccasin Mountains. Depuis des milliers d’années, les vents dominant du désert de l’Arizona dépouillent ces montagnes de leur grès, s’engouffrent sur les lieux et déposent ici des grains de sable fins.
La couleur rosée des dunes vient de la décomposition de ce grès (sous l’effet de l’érosion), coloré par l’oxyde de fer et le manganèse.
Films tournés ici
La ville de Kanab, surnommée affectueusement Utah’s Little Hollywood par le réalisateur William Wellman, a été pendant un peu plus de 40 ans la succursale préférée des sociétés de productions hollywoodiennes, un nombre considérable de films ayant été tournés dans la région depuis les début des années 1920 jusqu’au milieu des années 1970. Avec ses dunes de sable rose aux vagues allures africaines, le Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park a ainsi très souvent fait office de désert saharien. On peut notamment citer Les mille et une nuits (1942) où le calife de Bagdad et son frère se battent en duel pour la belle Scheherazade (Maria Montez) ; un conte qu’on ne présente plus Ali Baba et les 40 voleurs (Arthur Lubin, 1944), ou encore Tombouctou (Jacques Tourneur, 1959).
Dans un registre plus occidental, citons un des films qui a fait également la gloire de la région de Moab, La plus grande histoire jamais contée (1965) ; Un petit indien (1973), une petite production Disney où le héros est un chameau ! Et enfin et surtout le magnifique L’or de Mackenna (1969), film qui a déclenché une véritable passion pour l’Ouest américain chez de bien nombreux cinéphiles.
